Bull Rider

All Cam wants to do is skateboard even though his older brother Ben and grandfather are bull riders. Everything changes though when Ben is injuried in Iraq. Money is tight for the family and Cam rides his first bull to help his brother heal. His mom does not like it or his best friend. Cam has the opportunity to win some money which would help set up Ben in a business, but he has to lie about his age.

Alex, Viva and Ella have all turned seventeen and now they will be presented to society along with other young women. The three girls just are not interested in participating in this tradition. Soon they are drawn into a mystery which deals with spies in England giving important information to the French and Napolean.

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. Imagine that you are twelve-years-old enjoying hanging out with your friends learning to rap and dance when the village where you all live is attacked by rebels. You see people you know brutally killed and are separated from family. It is a matter of day to day survival for you and your friends until you become apart of the army and it is your life or theirs. Then all at once you are sent with some other boys to a school to become prepared to go back to a regular life. Is it possible? Did any of your family survive? Is the fighting away for good or will it come back?  This is a tough read to realize this really happened and how luck saved Ismael.

My Antonia

 I enjoyed this book as I grew up near where the story takes place. We get to know Jim and Antonia (Toni), their families and friends during the late 1800's. The conflicts between the families who had newly immigrated to the United States from Scandinavia and the differences the town and country folks placed on each other. We see how they change over the years, what they did and where they ended up living. Can what they experienced be similiar to the lives of immigrants today?

The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester. Have you ever wanted to fly under your own power? That's what Piper McCloud can do. She has been floating since she was a baby. Her parents have kept her isolated from her community until a Fourth of July picnic when the community sees her fly! She is taken to a special school with other children, plants and animals which have special powers. Something is not quite right with the school and Piper and the other kids try to escape and go home to their families. Will it work or will they be there forever?

Oliver doesn't exactly fit in at his middle school and yet he runs a huge cooperation. Happy 2010 to you all! It has been restful and peaceful time. I did a little reading during the break. How about you?

I read Jumped by Rita Williams-Garcia. It deals with a girl knowing another girl is going to be jumped by others and whether she should say something or not.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner. What if you were part of a game of survival with others watching what was going on and having some control over events? What would you do?

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han. Two families who have spent many summers together at the beach, but this summer, which may be the last one they enjoy together has different events for each to deal with individually and with others.
